Thoroughbred Training Challenge

New in 2024

A demonstration of horsemanship skills, training techniques and the versatility of off the track thoroughbreds.

  • Our Competitors

Three local horsemen and women will be selected to take part in our inaugural Thoroughbred Training Challenge. The aim is to demonstrate the trainability and versatility of the Thoroughbred and re-train them to be able to compete in a range of different events. This year our confirmed riders so far are:

    Paige Baxter

    Megan Palmer

  • The Challenge

Our three riders will have the three off the track horses at their place for about 1 month before the event. In this time they can get to know their horse, establish some basics and build trust. Over the weekend of the event, riders will be able to talk about and demonstrate to the crowd how they're progressing and what training techniques are working with their horse. On Sunday in Ring 2, horse and rider teams will be tested across a variety of events inc. a sporting event, obstacle course, jumps course, and hack pattern.

  • Our Sponsors

This challenge strives to open up new pathways for thoroughbreds retiring from racing to go into the challenge world. By showcasing the ability and versatility of thoroughbreds we're hoping to highlight that any capable riders (rather than professional trainers) would have what it takes to re-train an off the track racehorse for their chosen discipline. We'd love to hear from any business who wants to be involved with this positive initiative.

Prydes EasiFeed are providing all feed for these three thoroughbreds throughout the re-training process.

Scone Equine Transport will carry out all relevant transport for the horses over this challenge.

Godolphin Lifetime Care are putting up the prize money for our winner.
